KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Imposter syndrome and loneliness are normal when you run your own business. In times like these, turn to your community, your friends and seek out a sense of connection.

  • Community is a virtuous circle; share tips, get advice, benefit from referrals and celebrate the wins. You can be each other’s competition and each other’s biggest supporters.

  • Goals need to be personal; ask yourself why do you want to make X money? What is the reason?

  • To break into shooting destination weddings; show your audience you have a passport, you have a base elsewhere in the world, you will travel and that you can make magic anywhere you go.

Thank you for listening to the Life and Lens podcast. We'll be back with more insightful conversations in our next episode.

SUMMARY

Alice Andre is a French wedding and editorial photographer based in Perth, Australia. Her work has a documentary approach with an editorial finish and in just 3 years she has established herself as one of Perth’s best wedding photographers, as well as shooting destination weddings in European summer.

Alice first came into my orbit via social media as one of the photographers that I looked up to when I started my own business. We met in person for the first time at the Hoedown 2022 in a hearts-on-fore rejuvenating workshop/retreat/creative-reset.

Alice attributes her success to two things: practice and community.  Early days, she picked up her camera at every opportunity to hone her craft; shooting everything from sunset portraits for couples she’d met on Facebook, to simple styled shoots in Europe with just a model, dress and bunch of flowers.

Community and connection are values that Alice holds dear. When imposter syndrome creeps in or during lonely weeks editing wedding galleries, Alice turns to her friends in the industry through the local perth photography community or in-person events such as Hoedown.

Alice generously shares how goal-setting didn’t come naturally to her but after losing her job, she had to set some goals to achieve her dreams. Now that she’s established, she’s really checking in with herself in this season of her life; How much do I want to work and why? How do I protect my craft and stay inspired?

Finally, Alice shares her story of success and tips for breaking into the market as a Destination Wedding Photographer. Her advice is tangible and achievable which I love. On a personal note, I plan to put some of her tips in place now to see where this new direction can take me.
